Biodiversity and Environmental Training for Advisors (BETA)
A new modular training programme has been developed for advisors to help them to promote biodiversity protection and the use of Crop Protection Management Plans (CPMP) on farms.

This training programme benefits from certification gained by examination currently being developed in conjunction with BASIS.

Training will be via a flexible modular approach, combining ‘in-house’ training days facilitated by Train the Trainers events and direct training with a training provider. Good understanding of the following aspects will be required to gain the certificate.
| 1) |
Practical understanding of conservation management practices and
Biodiversity protection on farm |
 |
| 2) |
Use of and completion of Crop Protection Management Plans (CPMP) to assist the farmers they service |
 |
| 3) |
Use of Environmental Information Sheets (EIS) supporting crop protection products to ensure the farm environment is protected by best practice. |
 |
| 4) |
Sound knowledge of the Integrated Crop Management (ICM) which is used to inform decision making on appropriate crop protection measures. In particular the risks and impacts on water and biodiversity on the farm need to be considered. |
To help fulfil these requirements:

Module 1
Training days are being offered by ARET, Harper Adams and FWAG to all candidates who do not already have a good grounding in this area. Attendance at up to 2 training days (depending upon experience) in biodiversity/farmland conservation and will include a farm visit to ensure that practical knowledge is demonstrated

Modules 2 & 3
To ensure that candidates are sufficiently prepared to be assessed in each of these
key areas, the CPA have worked closely with Otley College in Suffolk to prepare a
"Training for Trainers" course. This covers the use of
CPMPs and EIS (Modules 2 & 3).

Module 4
Sound knowledge of practical Integrated Crop Management is expected. If you already have a good knowledge of ICM from in-house training and on the job experience this should be sufficient. Specialist ICM training can be gained via attendance on the BASIS-LEAF ICM course. This is available from a range of training providers and agricultural colleges

If you would like more information or to access the Training for Trainers course discuss this with your training manager or contact Cath Harris at
