| Targets - Water Indicators |
Water quality is a key parameter by which the success of the Voluntary Initiative can be judged.
The VI Steering Group has agreed that EA dataset is currently the best measure for showing long term trends in pesticides
contamination of water. Current data shows that 3 - 4% of samples exceed the 0.1ppb drinking water standard; the VI target
is to maintain and increase the downward trend with the objective of achieving a 30% reduction in detection levels above 0.1ppb by 2006.
In addition, the same target applies to those nine pesticides most commonly found in untreated water.
The data collected by EA is not sufficiently sensitive to show all the changes that are being achieved by the VI; so an additional target
so an additional target of achieving at least an average 50% reduction in pesticides in three river catchments have been set.
The three river catchments are the Leam, the Cherwell and the Blythe;
additional data showing time series plots, weighted mean concentrations and periods
when pesticide leverls exceeded 0.1ppb and 0.5ppb thresholds will be used to assess the performance in each catchment.
