Water - Protection

A key long term objective for the VI is to protect water from diffuse and point sources of pesticides in order protect both the aquatic environment and reduce the costs for purifying drinking water.

The VI’s work on water protection is overseen by the VI Water Sub Group more detail on its activities can be found here. Key activities include:

VI Pilot Water Catchment Project
The VI has used this project to pilot new measures and to develop a toolkit of best practice measures in a number of surface and ground water catchments. The overall results have been encouraging with in some cases up to 98% improvement. A detailed report of the first five years work can be found here.
The VI pilot catchment project is continuing to be supported by the Crop Protection Association, Agricultural Industries Confederation, Water UK and individual water companies.

Promoting Best Practice
The experience in the VI catchments is being used to support the roll out of best practice advice in the H2OK? Think Water Campaign

Supporting the England Catchment Sensitive Farming Delivery Initiative
The VI is being funded by Defra to provide technical support and advice to the 40 priority catchments

TOPPS
In order to reduce pesticides reaching water from point sources, this EU Life funded project spreading the best practice message in 15 member states. The project is redefining best practice in pesticide handling and developing new training materials for operators.
