What is a Crop Protection Management Plan?
A Crop Protection Management Plan (CPMP) is a key measure of the Voluntary Initiative. Completing a plan ensures
that farmers and growers have considered the environmental impacts of pesticide use and identified steps to
reduce any adverse impacts. The CPMP should address the farm’s crop protection policy, consider water
protection, cover the direct and indirect impact of pesticides products on biodiversity and identify where
standards can be improved or adverse impacts can be mitigated.

A CPMP should address the farms crop protection policy, detail water protection measures taken, indicate a commitment to improve standards and consider how the direct and indirect impact of plant protection products on non-target species can be mitigated.

Why should I complete a CPMP?
The CPMP helps put the environment at the heart of crop protection. At an individual farm level, the planning process identifies the environmental risks to water, insects, plants and animals, and biodiversity on the farm, and seeks to relate subsequent crop protection practices to minimising these risks.

A current CPMP is required or recommended by many Farm Assurance schemes and was an option worth 2 points/Ha in the Entry Level Scheme for agreements made before March 2007.

CPMP uptake is a key measure by which politicians and interest groups judge the success of the VI. If farmers complete a CPMP and return the summary sheet, the VI is able to demonstrate the benefits of self regulation and thus cut down the risks of more red tape and more restrictions on pesticide use.

Who should complete a CPMP
All farms are encouraged to participate, including mixed or livestock farms that occasionally spray grassland or grow a small acreage of cereals for stock feed to grow maize for silage.

A survey of farmers has shown CPMPs helped them manage the use of pesticides on their farm better, apply the products more sensitively and avoid waste. 75% felt that filling out a formal plan was more helpful, allowing them to focus their thoughts on how they could improve operations while helping the environment.

How can you complete a CPMP
There are three currently recognised ways of completing a CPMP.

1. Complete a LEAF audit www.leafuk.org
2. Complete an EMA audit www.herts.ac.uk/aeru/ema
3. The farming unions VI Crop Protection Management Plan

Other versions may be available from farm software companies or commercial consultants. Whichever method you use you must keep it up-to-date - reviewed annually - to be of real value.

A comprehensive review led by the NFU during 2007 has resulted in a new format for the CPMP.
There are now three versions of the CPMP

An online version at www.cpmponline.com (in development)
A 12 page printed version that can be downloaded here as a pdf or obtained from the NFU or your agronomist
A spreadsheet which calculates your answers can be downloaded here

A number of changes have been made:
- the format now covers one year only allowing easier updating of questions to reflect legislative changes
- the structure has been changed the four sections are: planning and preparation, field management, sprayer operator and storage/record keeping.
- It is recommended that the sprayer operator or spray contractor (as well as the agronomist) is involved in completing the CPMP especially the sprayer operator section
- The questions now require a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer. If the answer is ‘No’ you can move on to the next question. If the answer is ‘Yes’ you then need to look at the list of options underneath and select ALL the measures that apply to your farm
The simple format of the CPMP helps you assess your current practices and provides you with best practice guidelines for improving both the way you store, handle and apply pesticides for the benefit of both wildlife and water. After a good first set up session, it only needs short annual reviews.

Where
Log on to www.cpmponline.com (in development) to complete an online version
To get a copy of the proforma, down load it here:
It is available as
CPMP Portrait PDF
Excel spreadsheet

Printed copies can be obtained from:
the NFU's Orderline Service ( No. 655) on 0870 845 8458

Completed your CPMP?
The completed CPMP is first and foremost for you to use and implement on your farm; however you should be share your conclusions with your agronomist(s)as it will help them to understand your priorities and they may be able to help you make any improvements In order to demonstrate the uptake of CPMPs by farmers, the Farming Unions would like you to supply them with a copy of the summary information this can be done either by:
- If you complete the online version of the CPMP at www.cpmponline.com (in development) your data is captured automatically
- If you complete a LEAF audit, annual summary data is supplied by LEAF to the VI
Alternatively you may
- fax the summary sheet to 024 7685 8501,
- email the completed spreadsheet to: cpmpreturns@voluntaryinitiative.org.uk
- post the summary sheet to CPMP Returns, Policy Dept, NFU, Agriculture House, Stoneleigh Park, Stoneleigh, Warks, CV8 2TZ
All information supplied will be treated in the strictest confidence and no individual farmer will be identified.
